LE MONDE, June 18 th 2015

This is a drawing exhibition, not far from two hundred, inked or pencilled. They cover three walls of the gallery, occasionally painted black. The most of them are portraits, including those of Marlene Dietrich, Mahatma Gandhi, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jules Caesar and Batman, easily recognizable. There are also some unknowns, octopus, a moody Cyclops and various monsters. However, this might not be what we first see as the most astonishing remains in the extreme diversity of graphic styles, juxtaposed by a deliberately chaotic installation. Truc-Anh, 32 years old, appears to be as comfortable with Goya as he is with Dix, with Hokusai as he is with Warhol. He knows them so well there is nothing laborious in its variations, drawn with a speed and remarkable freedom of movement. Also, it is less a drawings exhibition to look one by one than an installation that plays with heterogeneity, contradictions and tensions created from one work to another. It says a lot about the current state of art, its memory saturated of references and the need to get out of it. To achieve this, Truc-Anh chose to smash through in order to disperse it : this might not be a bad method. “

TELERAMA, July 2015

"The Game of Faith" by Lisa Gerven

Antwerpen, Belgium, 2014

"For a long time, the artist was seen as somebody who had access to the true nature of life, the genuine, higher truth, maybe even to the sublime. It was his job to make this knowledge comprehensible for the common man. Truc-Anh, however, does something radically different. What Truc-Anh shows is the confusing part of life. "

"Q - What do you mean by enigma ?
A - I believe that a painting has to challenge you over the course of time. Today, 90% of images are "ready to think". The concept itself has turned into crutches and statements like some slogan. It’s a huge mistake, because the eye of the viewer becomes passive. A piece of art should resist the consumption mechanism."

" The poet John Keats referred to this ambiguous resistance as “negative capability.” In the work of Truc-Anh, “negative capability” is registered on a monumental scale, tethering us to our fleeting, fragile, and very human condition."
